AYM owner - Althea Lawton-Thompson - has worked with various hospitals and wellness centers since 1996 creating fitness programs for and teaching special populations like prenatal women, obese youth and those suffering from debilitating diseases. She created a post-natal program for Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, a youth obesity fitness program for Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, and a yoga-inspired wellness class for Kaiser Permanente in Atlanta. She has spent years working with clients suffering from Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, and Fibromyalgia. In addition to wellness, Althea loves dancing and movement. Aerobics, Yoga & More (AYM) is her vision of wellness, fitness and fun for all populations and ages.
Being very conscious of the environment, Althea made every effort to make AYM as eco-friendly as possible. The floors in the dance studios are made of natural bamboo and are suspended over a pine subfloor. The floor of the personal training studio is made of recycled natural cork material. Additionally, recycled carpet makes up the mosaic of the lobby floor. Low voltage fluorescent lights are used throughout the studios and lobby. Most of the center is physically underground, requiring less energy to keep it cool in the warm Georgia spring and summer months. Althea made a conscious decision to use more expensive LED lighting instead of neon in her outdoor sign because of the hazard of disposing of neon and the reduced energy consumption of lighting LED signs.
Class variety and quality instruction are the foundation of AYM's program. We offer dance instruction, fitness classes and all levels of Yoga for youth, adults and seniors. And every instructor is an educated and experienced professional in their specialty area.
